Counseling

Academic Counselors

The Counseling Team at St. Bernard High School is dedicated to nurturing and fostering the intellectual, spiritual and emotional attributes found in each of our students. Each student is assigned an academic counselor upon acceptance to St. Bernard High School. Academic counselors are there to advocate for students and to make sure they are successful in their classes, take the right classes, and ensure they are on track to graduate and get into college. They ensure that students are aware of their own personal responsibility while helping be a liaison between parents and teachers.

St. Bernard High School begins the college counseling process in the student's sophomore year by introducing them to Naviance, a wonderful website/program specifically geared to "prepare students for college, career, and life with a research-backed readiness framework and comprehensive toolset. Naviance creates connections between students' strengths and interests to success after high school." Guiding the students through the program are their grade level counselors, the college counselors, and site coordinators from UCLA EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program) who are highly knowledgeable regarding the steps students need to take leading up to and including the application process for college. Additionally, St. Bernard High School hosts college fairs and visits from college representatives throughout the year. This is an important step in a student's educational life, which is why at St. Bernard High School, the college admission process is not limited to junior or senior year.

College Counselors

Applying for college and preparing to leave high school behind is a difficult process for students and their parents, and we understand that there will be questions and concerns along the way. As our Vikings work through their college application process, they will have counselor support each step of the way. Whether they’re still deciding where to apply, drafting and revising admissions essays, applying for financial aid, or submitting an academic profile to the NCAA Clearinghouse, our students will have the on-campus support they need to make it happen.

The college application process is an exercise in project management. Your ability to complete it successfully is one important indication of your college readiness. Understand the timeline, stay organized, and you’ll be fine. In fact, you’ll be more than fine. You’ll be empowered, and will be the architect of your own future. This is your future and your choice, within the financial parameters set by your parents. Your St. Bernard’s College Guidance Team is here to help you with your choices, and we’ll ask your parents to be involved from the back seat, supporting you in the ways you tell them are most helpful to you.

What is A-G Subject Requirement?

The intent of the “A-G” Subject Requirement is to ensure that students can participate fully in the first-year program at the University in a wide variety of fields of study. The requirements are written deliberately for the benefit of all students expecting to enter the University, and not for preparation for specific majors. UC faculty considers the Subject Requirement to be effective preparation, on many levels, for undergraduate work at the University. This pattern of study assures the faculty that the student has attained a body of general knowledge that will provide breadth and perspective to new, more advanced study. Fulfillment of the “a-g” pattern also demonstrates that the student has attained essential critical thinking and study skills..

With the exception of PE and Health, all graduation requirements must be taken at St. Bernard during the regular school year. In order to earn a St. Bernard High School diploma, a student must have attained a minimum of 240 academic credits distributed as follows:
