Return to School: COVID-19 Updates

The safety and health of our students, staff, and community are, and must be, the primary focus of our decisions. This continues to be a very fluid time in our lives and we truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and collaboration.
Due to Governor Newsom’s directive and the announcement by the LA County Public Health Office that no school would be allowed to begin on-campus instruction during the month of August, St. Bernard High School will start the school year in a remote learning model that utilizes much of the flipped classroom learning concept along with blended learning pedagogy.

However, as Mr. Paul Escala, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, has outlined, we are hopeful that we will be able to adopt our hybrid model during the course of the Fall semester. At the point that LA County announces that schools may resume in-person instruction, St. Bernard High School will take one week to make the necessary adjustments to our campus and will begin our hybrid model.
Please look through the materials below for more information about St. Bernard High School's plan for the 2020-2021 school year and check back for updates as the year progresses.
A virtual orientation "Welcome Week" over Zoom will be August 17-August 21.
The Orientation schedule will be the same each day.
JUNIORS will have their orientation on Monday, August 17.
SOPHOMORES on Tuesday, August 18
FRESHMEN on Wednesday, August 19
SENIORS on Thursday, August 20.
All students need to connect to the zoom link at 8:30am on their assigned day.  ATTENDANCE WILL BE TAKEN!  The morning will begin with prayer and welcomes from Mr. Billups and Mr. Paysinger along with a digital introduction of our staff.  At approximately 9:15 there will then be presentations focused on Student Technology, Student Life, and Athletics.  At the end of these presentations there will be a break until 11:00am.
All students will need to re-connect to Zoom at 11:00am for 3 additional presentations focused on Counseling, Campus Ministry, and Performing Arts.  Each day will end at approximately 12:00pm, with our Mass of the Feast of St. Bernard starting shortly after 12:00pm on THURSDAY.  ALL students are to attend the Mass via a special zoom link and Mass will also be streamed on Facebook Live on the Principal SBHS Facebook page.
On Friday, August 21st, all students will receive an email with directions to complete a back-to-school reflection and goal setting assignment.  We will also share digital copies summarizing the various presentations the students received during Orientation. On August 24, will begin our remote learning schedule.
  • As we have shared over the last few weeks, we will be moving forward under the current State and LA County protocols with plans to bring our students back to campus on Monday, April 19.  We have submitted our COVID Safety protocols to the State and County are awaiting their approvals.  Assuming they come in and the county remains in the Red or lower tiers, we are confident in bringing students back to campus. Please plan, in the meantime, for the following upcoming activities:

    • March 29 and 30: on campus, “drive-thru” student ID pictures.  Ms. Roberts emailed details earlier this week.

    • Easter Break begins on Thursday, April 1.  Students will return to “Zoom” courses in the current format from Monday April 12th through April 16th.

    • On Monday, April 19, all students with last names beginning with A-J will come to campus for “Safe Return Orientation” and Faith Formation.

    • On Tuesday, April 20, all students with last names beginning with K-Z will come to campus for “Safe Return Orientation” and Faith Formation.

    • New Daily schedule will commence on Thursday, April 22.  A-J students will attend on campus classes on Mondays and Thursdays, K-Z students will attend on Tuesdays and Fridays.  When on campus, students will attend all six periods/classes.

    • Wednesdays will always be asynchronous allowing for additional deep cleaning of campus.

  • Uniforms: In recognizing that it is likely a year or more since uniforms were (or were not) purchased, students will NOT be required to wear the traditional SBHS uniforms during the brief restart following Easter Break.  HOWEVER, all students will be asked to wear clothing similar to our typical uniform: khaki or navy blue “docker” style pants or shorts and some type of an SBHS shirt and/or sweatshirt.  Athletic shorts/sweats/leggings/jeans will not be allowed and all clothing must fit appropriately.  If you would prefer for your student to simply wear the uniform, that is absolutely fine!  Uniform clothing can be ordered online at or by visiting their store in Inglewood.
